I think that for local people (especially southwestern Dutchess County), and those coming up via Metro North from the NYC metro area--this forum idea is win-win!
I think that it has advantages over the Meetup system because it has immediate wide-ranging potential (the many varied nearby scenic points, along the Hudson River region)... While also allowing like-minded networking outside the Meetup System (which restricts networking within Meetup).
Look forward to the search engines including HVH...along with users posting their related outdoor experiences and images.

Follow-up comment to my previous posting...
Recently made a posted message with an attachment (a product photo) in "Gear Reviews". Although I did not use the HVC-related image hosting--the image is STILL visible to me (using FireFox and IE). If that Gear Review photo (or any others a may post later on) is not viewable by other users, please notify me.

For the record, I'd like to make the following comment for Admin and any forum viewers interested, regarding (an automated?) restriction on post phrasings or key words...
I attempted posting a polite CLEANLY worded comment regarding aerial criss-crossing jet "exhaust" patterns, I observed (east-southeast) over Fishkill Ridge and Mount Beacon (Fri.morn. 29-Feb-2008).
I was UNABLE to successfully post the message--apparently due to some sort(?) of automated key word restriction or censorship in the review and submit process.
Quite irritating, to say the least...

It's my view at this time, that this "local Forum" idea is still ideal for the local tourism potential of southern Dutchess, as well as recreational individuals who travel along Metro North--especially as oil prices push upward gasoline prices.
However, if for whatever reasons forum participation is marginal, then the potential goes nowhere (imo)... Perhaps eventually, activity will truly increase (I hope so).
Edit: FWIW, Since my account has no De-Register function (no info listed in FAQs either), I'll opt for inactive.
