I was looking at an Elevation Map of the Beacon area (.pdf file available from City of Beacon website), when I realized the numerous nature-oriented areas with truly EASY ACCESS, from Beacon's Metro North Station.
By "EASY ACCESS", I mean by foot, by bicycle or even via a nearby public bus or taxi. For Beacon there are several areas adjoining the Hudson River bank (western side of Beacon)--amongst which is Dennings Point State Park, connected through a trail walk to the Beacon Station waterfront.
In addition, about a 45-55 minute walk (from the train station) takes one to the foot of Mount Beacon... Similarly, there is the new Hiddenbrooke park area (100 acres open nature space)--with a soon-to-be updated site describing it's history and interesting foliage.
In nearby Fishkill, there's the access-way to the Fishkill Ridge mountain range--a substantially greater area than Mount Beacon.
Additionally, in close rail proximity, is Breakneck Ridge with it's own train stop, just before Beacon Train Station...
All in all, quite a concentration of nature-oriented easy-access areas...and quite an understated hike/adventure potential also (imo).

Follow-up comment to my previous...
I kinda of tried to present my "understatement" comment from the point of view of a would-be-hiker living in the NYC metro area (where owning an automobile is somewhat "problematical"... Also, with respects to the somewhat capricious incremental increases of gasoline pump prices and crude oil itself.
As of this posting, a barrel of crude is approximating US$100 per barrel--although it only costs approximately USą50 to produce per barrel in Saudi Arabia (as example). Quite likely oil will eventually wind up (manipulated) to significantly higher prices unfortunately... So driving distances, and relative accessibility should become much more critical eventually (imo)
